    A Fine Old Arawe Shield Kandrian Area, West New Britain Island, Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea, Early 20th Century
    this beautiful shield is made of three parts of wood that are bound together with rattan, the front has finely incised circular designs and highlighted with red & black & white colours. The back also has elaborated painted designs & a lug handle.

  • Provenance:
    Collected in 1965-1966 by the Geologist Peter Austin. Part of Austin's collection was sold to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and published in a book 'New Guinea: Big Man Island' by ES Rogers, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto Canada 1970; & The Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic Art
