  Three Superb Old Tapa Cloths Called Megaru, Arawe People, Kandrian Area, West New Britain Island, Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea
  some of the finest hand painted bark cloths were made by the Arawe people from the Kandrian area of West New Britain. The designs on this hand painted loincloth are called megaru.

• Notes:
  These Tapa Cloth are described in the book ' Form Colour Inspiration: Oceanic Art from New Britain 2001 Edited by: Ingrid Heermann, the chapter on the Arawe People Pages 152-163 by Chantal Knowles & Chris Gosden. 'As with other New Britain Shields, an elaborate & certainly more person design is concealed from their opponents is on the back of the shield. These designs echo the designs used on bark cloth that men wear around their waists. Beatrice Blackwood an anthropologist working in the area in the 1930's noted the painting was done to tradition clan designs which were rendered from memory only & never copied. Sometimes more than one man would contribute to the decoration on one Tapa Cloth. The designs might refer to significant local items such as pigs' tusks (an important wealth item), fishing nets or the natural environment with images that evoke creeping vines or snakes or designs that came to the artist in dreams '
