this very old stone carved shield has fine incised designs that have worn smooth over time. It was tied over the front of a man's chest to protect against enemy arrows.

Notes:This beautiful old Shield was collected by a Geologist Andy Kugler in 1967, he was working on oil & gas exploration in Papua New Guinea. Most of his collection was loaned to The Museum of Primitive Art in New York in the 1970's and some published in the important publication Crocodile & Cassowary by Douglas Newton for the Museum of Primitive Art in NY
