Notes:This expressive and well carved Asmat Sculpture in the form of a man holding a head to his stomach area which was part of the male initiation into manhood. For the Asmat people headhunting was an integral part of their spiritual wellbeing and their artworks. When I was in the Asmat many times old people told me that they were very happy it was no longer practiced as they previously always lived with fear of attack from stronger villages.
