This type of inkstones are usually of long and thin slab, made of stone. It is used by women to grind a mineral called dai for eyebrow makeup during the Han dynasty, hence it is often called dai yan, meaning, inkstone for dai. In early Han dynasty, inkstones for writing and for makeup function similarly, however differ in terms of their target groups: one for scholars and officials, and the other, women. As a result inkstone for writing are usually larger than that for eyebrow makeup. Compare with similar ink-slabs, see the collections of Luoyang Jinshi Wenzi Museum, on their homepage.
