(Mask Upper Sepik) Field Collected by Douglas Newton in 1967, he was the curator of both the Museum of Primitive Art in NY and later the Rockefeller Wing of Oceanic Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY. Later he sold it to John Freide of the famed Jolika Collection at the De Young Fine Art Museum in San Francisco.
  • Notes:
Masks in the Sepik region of northeast New Guinea were not always created to be worn on the face. Many groups create, or created, flute masks, such as this example. They served as ornaments for sacred flutes, which were important ceremonial instruments in many parts of New Guinea especially in the Sepik River region. These small masks depict powerful spirits whose voices are the sound of the flute and heard only from the confines of the Men's Ceremonial House.
