Two Fine Woven Timbuwarra Figures, Pangia Area, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea
These woven figures called Timbuwarra are made only by the Wiru People in a very small area of Pangia in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. There has been very little written about these fibre figures but here is some information I had read about them. These figures are ancestor spirits & memorials to the dead. In Wiru language Timbu means sky, so literal translation is Sky Beings" The ?figures were carried over the heads of the clan leaders during ceremonies to honour the ancestors & later stored in the cult house by hanging them on the walls. Next to the cult house that contained the Timbuwarra was another cult house called aruayabu which contained the skulls of their ancestors & ancient stone mortars & pestles ".
