Lot Description:Two Fine Old Ancestor Figures, Coastal Sepik Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Mid-20th Century
the Birdman Ancestor Figure on the left has been a favourite of mine for 40 years, it's an old figure and the arms were broken off long ago but the figure was continued to be used, the hands are still on the hips and there is an old red back patina from use, Size; 25cm on custom stand. The other Ancestor Figure on the right is wearing an elaborate headdress that was worn in the area by initiated men wear their hair was pulled up through a decorated conical rattan ornament often decorated with dogs' teeth and traces of red ochre.
