A Superb Carved Sago Pounder, Coastal Sepik Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Early to Mid-20th Century
In the form of a beautifully carved totemic bird figure. When pounding Sago Pith there is a sharped bamboo end put over the beak to mash the sago pith and because that is replaced regularly and that is why this sago axe handle is in such good condition & with old patina; on a custom stand.
