2001 Ducati 996S Carbon - Custom Carbon version of the legendary Ducati 996S
In response to the release of the Honda VTR1000F, Suzuki TL1000S, and Aprilia RSV Mille, Ducati was forced to increase the displacement of the 916 to 1000cc. This saw the birth of the 996 in 1999, and it continued to set the benchmark for sporting twin cylinder motorcycles. The 996 also dominated on the racetrack; Carl Fogarty winning the World Superbike Championship in 1998 and 1999 on the factory 996. The 996 engine was based on the 1997 and 1998 limited production 916 SPS. This featured the stronger crankcases with a wider cylinder stud pattern to comfortably allow for 98mm pistons with a respectably thick cylinder liner. However, there was more to the engine than simply larger pistons, and the entire intake and exhaust tuning was redesigned. This saw not only the maximum power and torque increase, but also the general power characteristics improved along with the overall rideability. Also from the SPS came the 11.5:1 pistons and larger valves (36mm inlet and 30mm exhaust) but in most other respects the specification was that of the 916 Biposto. This included the 916 desmodromic camshafts (with mild timing and relatively low lift) and gearbox, but with a new crankshaft (of higher tensile strength to handle the increased power), and a revised clutch basket and clutch actuation system. With the stronger crankshaft came larger crankshaft bearing shells and thicker crankshaft shims. The con-rods were still the forged steel 916 Biposto type. The 1.6 M B1 Weber injection system now included twin injectors per cylinder and the result of these developments saw an engine that produced 112 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. The chassis was largely unchanged from the 916 but the front fork now allowed for the fitting of the new type wider mount Brembo brake calipers. The claimed weight was 198kg dry. For the 2000 Model Year there were only detail improvements to the 996, notably new five-spoke Marchesini wheels. There was also a smaller PS 12mm clutch master cylinder, new wiring, and a "Ducati Corse" tachometer. As there had been in 1999, a 996S was also available in the US. This had a standard 996 engine in a 996 SPS derived chassis. Thus, the Monoposto 996S had an &Öhlins shock absorber, and an aluminium rear subframe, but retained the 43mm Showa forks of the 996.The 2001 996 S on offer here (build 01/2001) is a Japanese import that has been considerably customised. Based on the basic 996S Monoposto layout, this was fitted with a 996 SPS &Öhlins front fork and steering damper to complement the standard &Öhlins shock absorber. The engine received a STM Racing red anodised slipper clutch and cover and Termignoni exhaust with carbon fibre muffler cans. Other carbon fibre components include a full Ducati Performance R-spec fairing kit, swingarm cover and heat shielding. Custom Red Pearl paint with ceramic paint protection sets this spectacular machine off. Other custom upgrades include Champagne Gold footpegs and controls, an aluminium coolant tank, and Bridgestone Battlax tyres. The odometer reads 31795 km.
