2015 Norton Commando 961SE Carbon Edition - Hand built Limited Edition; One of only 200 worldwide and 50 made for the US
Norton was founded in 1898 by James Lansdowne Norton and was soon established as one of the leading British motorcycle manufacturers. In 1907 Rem Fowler won the Isle of Man twin cylinder class on a Norton, establishing their strong racing tradition. Between the wars Norton won the Isle of Man Senior TT ten times and during the 1930s they won 78 of 92 Grand Prix races entered. After the Second World War the featherbed-framed Manx Norton kept the Norton name alive on race tracks and created the world's first production Superbike with the release of the Commando in 1967. The Commando finished in 1977 but Norton continued in fits and starts until 1999 when Kenny Dreer in Oregon, USA, endeavoured to put a modernised Commando, the Norton 952 and later 961, into production. He ran out of money and in 2006 British businessman Stuart Garner acquired the Norton rights and Greer's design, announcing a rebirth of Norton Motorcycles in 2008. Out of a new factory at Donington Park in Leicestershire the 961 eventually made it into production in 2010. It took several years for Norton to receive US certification and for 2015 Norton offered the 961 in four variants. The top-of-the-line model was the 961 SE, with only 50 available in the US. These were initially delivered without a Special Edition plate but this was sent out later. The 961cc parallel twin engine was originally designed by Dreer to maintain strong links with the original Commando. Still air-cooled, with two valves per cylinder operated by pushrods and dry sump lubrication, the 88x79mm twin looked visually similar to the original. Modern features included a three-bearing crankshaft, hydraulically operated valves and a balance shaft. With a 10.1:1 compression ratio, electronic fuel injection, and DT stainless steel exhaust system, the engine produced 80 horsepower at 6,500rpm. Much of the development was undertaken by Oxfordshire-based Menard Competition Technologies (MCT), specialists in race and production engineering. As on the original Commando the tubular steel cradle frame incorporated the oil tank but was engineered using the latest CAD/CAM techniques to give the right balance of stiffness, weight and durability. The SE was fitted with the highest quality components available. This included a fully adjustable &Öhlins 43mm conventional style fork and fully adjustable remote reservoir &Öhlins twin rear suspension units. Axially mounted Brembo four-piston "Gold Series" calipers combined with Brembo 320mm discs provided impressive braking capability whilst maintaining the classic Commando styling. The wheels were lightweight Blackstone TEK (BST) carbon fibre, in modern sizes of 3.50 X 17-inch and 5.50 X 17-inch. Along with the wheels the Commando SE carbon pack on the Commando SE included the front mudguard, headlight mounts, rear hugger, chain guard and rear number plate hanger. Other bespoke SE features included billet machined fork triple clamps and tapered aluminium handlebars. The traditional analogue-style instruments were fully electronic. Rolling on a 1,420mm wheelbase and weighing 188kg the Norton Commando 961 SE promised the best of both worlds; modern technics in a classic package. This 2015 Norton Commando 961SE is offered with full Australian Compliance and is in perfect condition with only 2,068 miles on the odometer. This motorcycle is being sold unregistered.
