A Rare Example of a House Board, Chambri Lakes,, Sepik River Region, Papua New Guinea, 19th Century
although there is no sign of a handle, this board displays the exact characteristics of a shield from this region, as shown in three examples on show in New York at the Museum of Natural History. Artefacts from this region are rarely encountered, their distinctive food hooks being the exception. Interestingly, the back has an incised symbol carved, almost as though the artist signed his work, which makes for an unusual touch.
