A Superb and Rare Ancestor Figure, Biwat People, Yuat River Region, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Late 19th or Early 20th Century
this figure with it's aggressive stance, a main characteristic of Yuat River figural carving, along with the large imposing head, makes this culture so recognizable, and yet so unique when one compares it to the art of the two main New Guinea carving regions, Middle and Lower Sepik areas. Freestanding figural examples can be found in the Museum of Natural History, NYC, collected by Margaret Mead in the 1930's, the British Museum, and the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney. One might say that figures are rarer than the normally encountered flute stoppers from this region.
