Lot Description:An Elaborate Kula Exchange "Necklace" (Soulava), Massim Region, Papua New Guinea
with a cresent shaped pearl shell disc profusely decorated with plastic and ceramic beads and shells attached to a terminus consisting of two large cowrie shells linked by a a long string (bagi) of highly valued polished red spondylus shells. Acquired Trobriand Islands, 2008.
Total length 114 cm; width of pearl shell 19 cm. -
Provenance:Collection of a scholar who worked in PNG over several decades.
