    An Early 20th Century Papua New Guinea Mask
    Adjirab tribe, Chambri river, East Sepik province, Papua New Guinea. It has a tortoise shell carapace, built up with baked clay to form facial features. Cowrie shells form the eyes and smaller ones are used to represent hair on the chin and top of head. It is edged with a stiff woven material. The same woven material, decorated with bird of paradise feathers, forms a frame for the mask. The face is further decorated with gray, black and red. Height 52cm
