  • Provenance:
    Christie's, 6 December 1994, lot 215; Private collection, Sydney
  • Notes:
When discussing the related work, Heather Johnson asks: "What were the landscapes de Maistre painted at this time? An untitled landscape of the Southern Highlands, undated (Plate 20), Mt. Valdemar 1927 (Plate 21), Balmoral 1927 (Plate 22) and an untitled landscape of Palm Beach 1926, are examples. These paintings are not depictions of the Australian bush, gum trees and blue skies. They are representative of the Australia de Maistre knew well. The Sutton Forest/Moss Vale area was where he grew up and often returned to on painting trips. An elderly store keeper in Sutton Forest, himself an amateur artist, recalled de Maistre and 'Rolly' Wakelin often painting in the area. The district is well planted with English trees; its temperate climate separates it from the sun and heat normally associated with Australian bush."1 1. ibid, p. 66
