  • Notes:
"In 2001 I completed a book of poetry which was to be called Chiaroscuro. Bob was generous enough to do the illustrations for that book - inspired by the poems. I went on to have a final exhibition of those poems and works together over many years, finally having a selling exhibition of the charcoal works that I was given back then. I always kept a few aside and these works represent the balance of that collection. This is the last of those images. The poems hopefully explain the imagery (or vice versa). I have included a signed copy of the poetry book with each of these images to help with the narrative but the imagery is very much stand alone," Jenny Dickerson. In the home He is not asleep but waiting for his dead brother Jack. Around him in the warm of afternoon they sit with gaudy afghan rugs spread on tired and bony knees waiting their turn. Laura Bathgate who taught primary school Now calls aloud a private roll And puzzles over jumbled names Of children who have grown and longtime gone. A nurse, who once was in her class Straightens her up in the chair. He is still not asleep but watching as they put out the lunches And wondering why the food for Harry Day looks better than his lot. Where, he asks, is my special spoon And am I getting a roast potato? He is watching them. Laura Bathgate wants to ring the bell And Mrs Tozelli whose husband comes twice a day to visit (with flowers) is distractedly twisting her handkerchief Into knots trying to remember him He is leaving them. His condition worsens every day. Once he did wheelies in the electric wheelchair And sang the old school song in X-ray Now he cannot even see the morning sun. He is going to join his brother Jack.
