1923 FORD MODEL T BODIED BY PROPERTS OF SYDNEY
Chassis No: 1672. Engine No: C383732
  • Notes:
The Ford Model T is generally regarded as the first car that opened travel to middle class America. Ford’s efficient fabrication and assembly line production was indomitable and paved the way for the modern production line instead of individual hand crafting. The Ford Model T was named the most influential car of the 20th century in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, ahead of the BMC Mini, the Citroen DS and the Type 1 Volkswagen. In 2012, it stood eighth on the list of top ten of the most cars sold of all time reputedly at an astonishing 16.5 million units. Almost 170,000 were built even after car production ceased as replacement engines were needed to service the myriad of existing vehicles. Racers and enthusiasts used the Model T’s block to build popular and cheap racing engines, including Cragar, Navarro and Frontenac’s of the Chevrolet Brothers, among many others. Louis Chevrolet and his brothers founded the Frontenac Motor Corporation in 1916, to make racing parts for Ford Model Ts and became well known for their “Fronty-Ford” racers. This charming example was built at the Canada plant. It was bodied in Australia by Properts of Newtown indicated by the applied decorative body plate. Clem Smith bought this car from Mr. Bruce Feldtmann of Dookie, Victoria in November 2012. A detailed letter to Clem from Mr. Feldtmann explains that to his knowledge the car was known in the Rushworth, Nagambie, Shepparton districts as the Red Spider in the 1920s and 1930s. It was found in Shepparton during the 1950s in a neglected state. It was then restored by Col Anderson of Shepparton. Mr. Feldtmann acquired the car in about 1990 then embarked on further work including: All modern bearings; improved axles; an A Model crankshaft and rods; Frontenac head and an original Fronty manifold; new valves and bearings; new Kingpins and flywheel bearings; installation of a water pump and a Datsun distributor; front motorcycle disc brakes; rear hydraulic drum brakes and Hayes 21” wheels. The car is accompanied by its fold down roof and a Domestic and Overseas edition Ford Manual published by Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
