  1919 ESSEX MODEL A ROADSTER

• Notes:
  The Essex was introduced in 1919 and an astonishing 1.13 million Essex motorcars were sold by the time the Essex name was retired in 1932 and replaced by the Hudson Terraplane. These smart and agile vehicles were designed to suit the budget of the average family. The Essex proved so durable and good value for money they were utilised the United States Postal Service. The early Essex also competed successfully in hill climbs and Glen Shultz won the 1923 Pikes Peak in a specially built competition version. In an undated letter to Clem from a previous owner of this Essex, Ms Norma Schopp notes that her father Mr. Phil Klingberg of Murray Bridge had bought the car from Mr. Rudy Nitschke of Loxton North, in 1983. Earlier history is unclear but it is believed to have been owned by someone in the Barossa Valley. According to Ms. Schopp’s letter it has been speculated, “... that this car may have been one of a group of 1919 Essex cars imported for a round Australia type race for which someone had placed identical cars in each capital city”. Phil Klingberg was a member of the Murray Bridge Auto Collectors Club and participated in the Bay to Birdwood in 1984 and 1986. Norma Schopp inherited the car and subsequently sold it to Mr. Bob Petersen of Strathalbyn after enjoying it amongst her own collection and displaying it at various car events. This example was purchased by Clem from the SA and JC Milham Family Trust in May 2010. The sale is accompanied by an instruction book for the model, a service manual, a soft top hood and accompanying letters and correspondence. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
