1952 HUDSON HORNET CLUB SPORT COUPE MODEL 7B LHD

  • Notes:
The legendary “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” plays a star role in the history of US car making owed to its Grand National and stock car racing successes of the 1950s. Several drivers, including Marshall Teague and Hall of Fame Inductee, Herb Thomas, raced Hudson Hornets powered by Hudson’s own high-compression straight-six “H-145” engine. These intrepid race drivers campaigned a 1952 Hudson Hornet sponsored by Hudson Motor Company becoming the first factory backed race team in NASCAR history! The Hudson Hornet brand dominated NASCAR racing in the early 1950s contributing to 80 superb wins from 1951 to 1955 and winning 3 consecutive championships in 1951, 1952 and 1953. With the additional benefits of this racing development, the 1952 Hornet was available with the “Twin-H” twin single-barrel carburettors. With its L-Head - sometimes referred to as the flathead or sidevalve engine - at 308 cu in (5.0 L) it was purported to be the biggest 6-cylinder engine in the world at the time. The “Twin H-Power” version became standard equipment and the power increased to 170 hp. (The engine could be tuned to produce 210 hp when equipped with the “7-X” modifications that Hudson introduced later). The bonnet featured a functional air scoop to cool the carburettors as a method of ventilation rather than relying on ram air. During 1952 and 1953 the Hornet received minor cosmetic enhancements. These new Hudson’s had the widest front seats in the industry and the highly efficient Weather Eye heating and ventilation with optional air-conditioning. Well respected automotive journalist Floyd Clymer rated the Hudson Hornet as,“the safest car built in the United States because of (1) the single unit welded body, (2) high quality braking system with added mechanical backup system, (3) roadability, general handling, and manoeuvrability; as well as (4) excellent acceleration and power for emergency situations”. But, the Hornet’s fabulous racing successes could not help the production line downside to Hudson’s separate body-on-frame design. Keeping up with the burgeoning “Big Three” automakers, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, who were changing models on an annual basis without expensive chassis retooling was impossible and ultimately caused Hudson’s demise. The last Hudson rolled off the Kenosha assembly line on June 25, 1957. This example in the Clem Smith Collection was bought from Mr. Michael Heller of Los Osos California in July 2009. The car features a 3-speed column shift automatic transmission and the beautiful Hudson emblazoned appointments including the Weather Eye heating and ventilation. This fabulous car is painted in Texas Tan with matching fabric interior and carpets. The car is accompanied by the Vehicle Import Approval, Left Hand Drive exemption and Clem’s Historic Registration Logbook, purchase receipt and previous State of California Certificate of Title. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
