Sold new by Clem Smith with 50 year family ownership
  • Notes:
Back in the day when Australia had a car manufacturing industry where South Australia was an industry leader in the field of car making, Chrysler introduced the Phoenix in May 1960 as its Australian assembled version of the Dodge Dart. It was cleverly positioned above the Chrysler Royal as the 4-door luxury model. The car had loads of appeal for the Australian motorist as it was uber cool in the American style and with a manageable 318ci V8 engine, large enough without being gigantic. The Phoenix was built from 1960 to 1973. SD2 of 1962 featured the shorter 116 in wheelbase and a completely new body which was both shorter and narrower than its predecessor. Each year the Phoenix was restyled until a change of policy saw the 1965 Phoenix based on the American Plymouth Fury for the first time. But today, the most collectable model is this 1962 Phoenix, powered by a 5.2-litre V8 which could fly from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 11.3 seconds, with a top speed of 108mph. This car has a luxurious and ultra-modern interior for its time. Options abound with door-actuated courtesy lights; door pulls; twin sun-visors; heating and demisting; ashtrays front and rear, armrests and a windscreen washer; night driving mirror and a boot light make this car a super deluxe example. The 1962 model also features twin headlights inset within the grille, whilst the secondary lights are set low on the front bumper bars. Its front windscreen is broad and the rear windscreen is vee-shaped and quite remarkable. This car has self-adjusting, hydraulically-operated drum brakes with duo-servo action; independent front suspension; a torqueflyte 3-speed, fully automatic, dash operated, bush button gearbox and a dash operated handbrake round off this modernist car. This car was purchased new from Clem Smith Motors West Terrace dealership by Mr Hilary Walter Friend Williamson in 1962. Mr Williamson owned and loved his Dodge Phoenix until he sold it back to Clem in 2013. The car had always been regularly serviced and the engine was fully reconditioned by Clem Smith Motors in 1980 when the car reached 135,000miles. The original Chrysler Australia Vehicle packing slip, Drivers Instructions booklet, and Dodge Certified Car Care Plan service book, complete with servicing history accompany the car along with an original sales brochure bearing the slogan Step into “Luxury Unlimited” in the new Dodge Phoenix by Chrysler. The car is Alpine White with a red interior and is well preserved, representing a time capsule and an important keepsake in Clem’s collection. The current odometer reading is 50,112 miles approx. presumably being its 3rd time around. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
