  • Notes:
Henry Ford (1863 – 1947) started the Ford Motor Company in 1903. In 1908 he brought out possibly the most famous automobile of all time, the Model T, which stayed in production until 1927 by which time over 15,007,003 units had been sold all over the world. It was not so much the quality of the vehicle, which was cheap, strong, reliable and easy to maintain, that was so remarkable, but more the effect it had upon society. The Model T was a car for everyman and Henry Ford was astute enough to enlist the services of mass production, and to offer a spares service within reach of the most remote outposts via the widespread postal services covering the USA at the time. Its impact on the history of transport is immeasurable. The Model T was equipped with a 2.9 litre four-cylinder side valve engine, flywheel magneto for ignition (and subsequently lighting) and a two-speed epicyclic transmission. Very simple and rather fragile looking, the Model T was in fact exceedingly tough, and although low powered, light enough to handle the rough terrain it encountered which accounted for more powerful but heavier luxury machines. Many of its parts were made of tough vanadium steel when cars costing much more still used ordinary steel. Within months, more Model Ts had been sold than all other American cars combined. Contrary to popular belief, Ford’s edict of “any colour as long as it’s black” came much later and early Model Ts can be found in a range of colours. The Model T made Henry Ford a billionaire, and yet its success almost brought the Ford company to its knees as by the time the last one rolled off the production line, its technology was out of date and little research and development had been carried out with regards to an up to date replacement. The Ford Model T was capable of a top speed of some 45 mph, whilst its engine design featuring casting en bloc with a detachable head would become the norm for the industry. This fine example of the Model T was built in the Ford plant in Canada in 1913. Its previous owner was the President of the Model T Ford Club of Australia who professionally restored its some ten years ago, having the motor and gearbox restored by Croft. It is fitted with a full suite of Edwardian solid brass accessories, and repainted in its original colour. It was runner up in its class at the 2017 Sydney Concours d’Elegance.
