  • Notes:
On 8 June 1948, the first car to bear the Porsche name was road-certified: the Porsche 356/1 Roadster produced in Gmünd (in Carinthia, Austria). The “Gmünd Roadster” was powered by a 1.1-litre air-cooled flat-four engine from Volkswagen. The engine’s power was increased to 35 hp for the 356. The roadster weighed just 585 kilograms and reached speeds of up to 135 km/h (83 mph). Gradual improvements were made over the following eight years of production of the 356, including, of course, a coupé version. In 1956 the 356 was replaced by the much improved 356 A. The 356 A was available with five versions of the Porsche four-cylinder engine. One of the key visual differences between the A series and the original 356 was a single-piece, curved panoramic windscreen. The front indicators were always integrated in the horn grille and all models had a modified front lid handle with inset Porsche Crest. The tail lights were teardrop-shaped from March 1957 onwards. In 1957 the 1300cc engine models were discontinued. The tailpipes of the 1600cc models ended between the bumper guards to give more ground clearance. The chrome-plated housing with number plate lighting and reversing light was mounted below the number plate. The Porsche 356 A 1600 was produced between 1956 and 1959. It featured bumper bars, sill trims and a one-piece curved windscreen. It had a long, narrow handle with Porsche crest on the luggage compartment lid. Round rear direction indicators were positioned adjacent to the tail lights, with brake lights integrated in the tail lights. Being rear engine, this provided the flat front hood for this baby grand tourer. This factory right hand drive 1959 Porsche 356 A was delivered new to Hamiltons in Melbourne. It has had just three owners since new, the second of which, a lady journalist, ran the car for over 40 years. In highly original condition, we are told that this rare 356 A drives very well and has had a great deal of mechanical work carried out. It has a period correct though not its original 1600 engine.
