  • Notes:
The luxurious Mercedes-Benz 220S was first introduced in March 1956. Visually very similar to its predecessor it can be distinguished by a one-piece front bumper. Featuring the very reliable Mercedes-Benz six-cylinder engine, the 220S has a reputation for reliability and comfort. Before it was replaced in October 1959 by the ‘Fintail’ a total of 55,279 units in saloon form had been produced. In 1975 a man went out to buy a tractor. The asking price was 400 pounds more than he wished to pay. In the background of the shed was a very forlorn looking 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S. He offered to pay the asking price for the tractor, if the vendor sweetened the deal by including the 220S. And so, in buying a tractor long since forgotten, this is the story of how this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S has been in the possession of the current owner for the last 42 years. It was acquired from a deceased estate and was in a very bad state and had not been registered for several years. Over the next few years the new owner undertook a restoration of the bodywork, involving we are told the complete stripping to bare metal, repainting (in period correct Mercedes-Benz colour, though originally the vehicle was brown), re-upholstering and re-chroming. At this stage the speedometer was stuck on 50,000 miles and was not working. The speedometer was reconditioned and repaired in order that the car could be registered. After having driven the car for a couple of years, it was then decided to replace the engine for an authentic rebuilt engine. At the same time the car was converted from semi-automatic transmission (Hydrak), as indeed many were, to a more desirable manual which involved installing a newly reconditioned gearbox and differential and steering box. The car was then close to the current owner’s satisfaction and subsequently he has been driving it as a second/standby car ever since. Regularly serviced and maintained the only major work necessary has been the recent replacement of the water-pump. This factory right hand drive ‘Roundie’ has now just 71,521 miles registered on the speedometer which was reset to zero when the body work was done.
