Since the dawn of Italian industrialization, Fiat has played a leading role in the automotive industry. From the moment they first appeared on the market in 1899, the charter of Societˆ Anonima Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino or Fiat, has been recognized worldwide. The logo itself speaks of style and power and has become an illustrious status symbol due to its history of superior cars, prestige and tradition. Like so many automobile manufacturers, the company has undergone numerous changes and re-structures over the years. Early innovators, Fiat designed cars with many advanced features from the beginning of its production. It was also dominant in International motor racing until 1924. Beyond automotive production, the company developed public transportation, railways, shipping, aircraft and the steel industry before and after World War 1. A subsidiary was even established in Russia and Fiat Lubrificanti was founded. When Mussolini's come to power in Italy, Fiat had to abandon many of its plans for an international presence, concentrating on the production of needed equipment for the domestic market while developing new technology and designs for all forms of transport. When WWII broke out, the production of cars almost ceased as Fiat manufactured commercial and military vehicles, aircraft, weapons and machinery for the war effort. The company founder and president, Giovanni Agnelli, died in 1945 and Vittorio Valletta was to lead the company in post-war Italy. During WWII, many of Fiat's factories were destroyed, but by 1948 reconstruction had begun and Fiat continued to experience growth into the mid-1960s in both exports and domestic sales. By then, car ownership in Italy exploded from one car for every 96 Italians to one in 28! In addition to the company being at the forefront of manufacture in many sectors, its sporting endeavours were re-kindled. In the modern classic period alone, the Fiat 131 Abarth was a spectacular rally car and between 1976 and 1981 the Fiat 131 won 18 World Rally Championship events and also won the WRC three times: in 1977,1978, and in 1980. With its ownership of Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Abarth, Fiat today is the Italian motor industry. The delightful Fiat 130 model featured is the award winning design which first appeared in 1971 at the Geneva Motor Show and exhibits a stylish and exotic 2-door body with a luxurious interior by Paolo Martin of Pininfarina. These bodies were completely manufactured at the PininFarina works in Turin and sent to Fiat for mechanical assembly. The seats were shaped and designed by Paolo Martin with the collaboration of Giovanni Gottin, a specialist established in Turin. The instrument dash board and gauges integrate sporty round dials with white needles. The central console was redesigned by Paolo Martin with the use of wooden veneer and lighting utilizing period state of the art fibre optics. The steering column is adjustable for rake and reach and the driver's seat has a degree of height adjustment making this model a statement of Italian style and technology of the day. This beautiful coupe is powered by Fiat's 130 type BC V6 engine displacing 3,235 cc and producing 165 bhp (123 kW at 5,600 rpm and it has a Borg-Warner type 12 three-speed automatic transmission. The British magazine, Motor, praised the 130 for its excellent handling and road-holding, smooth ride, very high standard of interior and comfort plus an enormous boot. The UK's Autocar tested the car and described it as a dignified Italian. Concerning the handling, the road-testers went on to describe the coupe version of the 130 as providing a comfortable level of overall performance with good intermediate range torque. This example has been enjoyed by the same owner for some 32 years, and has a current odometer reading of 72,500 miles (approximately). This Australian delivered, factory right hand drive example, has had only 3 owners from new. A back to bare metal restoration, including the interior, was undertaken by the current owner around 25 years ago, with a stainless steel exhaust system being fitted. The car will be sold with a rare fully comprehensive workshop manual and receipts, together with a quantity of spare parts (list available). For the enthusiast who admires all thing Italian this Fiat offers an excellent opportunity to acquire both the names of Fiat and Pininfarina in one sporting car making it a most desirable and affordable acquisition for aficionados' and an entry level to a classic thoroughbred.
