    Inspired and built by brothers, Percy and Stanley Riley, the Riley 9 was the most popular pre-war model Riley produced, with nearly 30,000 cars made in 10 years. The younger Riley brother Stanley was responsible for the chassis, suspension and body, and the older brother Percy, designed the engine. The make's earliest successes were at Brooklands circuit in 1924 and this was subsequently commemorated by the Riley 9 Brooklands model with a four-cylinder 1087cc engine. Between the two world wars, Riley developed a reputation in motorsport events from Hill Climbs to Endurance Races, competing with success at racing circuits and hill climbs across the British Isles and Europe. The Riley 9 was in fact one of the most popular light sporting cars produced by the British motor industry with drivers of the ilke of Sir Malcom Campbell ( World Land Speed record), Dorothy Champney and Kaye Petre (Le Mans) and Reid Railton (notably later of the ERA project) all competing in Rileys. The Riley 9 was built between 1926-1938 as 4-door saloons, 2-door saloons and 2-door dropheads powered by 1.1-litre engines. The model proved to be a popular choice to modify for racing and continues to be used with gusto at today's historic motor sport events. The basis of this car presented at auction is a 1933 Riley 9. The suspension, brakes and general chassis configuration is Riley 9 but modified to deal with the significantly enhanced performance of its 1.5-litre engine which is the predecessor of the post- war RMA power plant. This engine was featured in the successful competition 1.5 Rileys and was race developed. This car, one that the legendary Harry Firth carried-out the initial competition modifications, under-went a total rebuild 7 to 8 years ago and has had minimal use since. It is fitted with a Rootes type SC14 blower. The body, styled on the Grebe 6 roadster, is coach built with aluminium panels over a timber frame. The Grebe 6 design was derived from a limited production factory racing TT Riley of 1933. Very few of the originals were built and examples are now highly sought after. That chassis, with semi-elliptic springs and rigid axles front and rear, was based on the car prepared for the 1933 TT races. This well-presented and handsome sports racing car has good performance and road-handling. The unique Riley mechanical brakes are retained and work very efficiently. The coachwork was fabricated by Historic Vehicle Restorations of Melbourne and the frame was built by the late Anton Walker of Geelong. The engine was prepared by Motor Improvements. Ready for driving, competition and much enjoyment, this car is eligible for a CAMS log book as a pre-war special as it meets all the relevant criteria to compete in the Group K category. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
