  • Notes:
The Alvis Car and Engineering Company, Coventry, was established by TG John in 1919. It produced a series of laudable 4-cylinder sidevalve models all of about 1 ? litres capacity designed by Geoffrey de Freville. The 10/30 developed into the 10/40, then the 11/40 and ultimately the 12/40 evolving in to the grand motoring icon of the 1920s, the Alvis 12/50. Built from 1923 to 1933 The Master of the Kings Highway 1 sported splendid Duckback and Beetleback body designs in sports racing or larger 5-seater saloons, the coachwork for the Alvis 12/50 generally being outsourced to companies such as Carbodies and Cross & Ellis resulting in strong performance sporting cars, desirable and of the utmost beauty. Various capacity engines were utilised: all straight 4 cylinder, over head valve in 1496cc, 1598cc or 1645cc power plants. From 1926, the 12/50 TE had a new stronger, long wheel base chassis, intended for a four-seater touring body with four wheels brakes. The L201 models had the 1496cc engines to enable them to qualify for the 1500cc class. This Special, built from an amalgam of genuine 12/50 components has undergone a second life span since 1974. In the words of the owner, 'I regard the car as having started its present life when it returned to the road in 1974. Before that bits and pieces emerged from the 1950s and changed hands many times. But Alan McKinnon added an engine and many more parts, made a car and put it on the road. It is not an 'original' car but all the main bits are Alvis and the whole is true to the marque.' The aluminium, fabric bodied, two-seater Beetleback coachwork was made in Australia in the late 1960's by Kevin Booth and covered by Geoff Davies. An active participant in VSCC and Alvis Club events throughout Australia, this car has been in devoted ownership for over 33 years and we are advised it will change hands due to the owner's age not the cars! The engine was rebuilt in 1983. A replacement 'big port head' made specifically for the UK 12/50 Register in 1990 has been appropriately fitted during 1993.
