  Synonymous with British motoring, the MG brand has been in continuous use, other than the war years, since its inception in 1924. Production of mainly two-seater sports cars was concentrated at Abingdon, near Oxford. The British Motor Corporation (BMC) competition department, also based at the Abingdon plant, produced many winning race and rally cars until it closed and MGB production ceased in 1980. The first MGB was a pure two-seat roadster. Albeit three inches shorter than its predecessor, the MGA, the B offered more passenger and luggage accommodation. Softer, smoother riding suspension, 14' wheels and the larger capacity 1800 engine gave a slightly higher top speed. The four-speed gearbox was an up-rated version of the MGA box with an optional (electrically activated) overdrive. In late 1967, sufficient design changes warranted the Mark II definition introducing a full synchromesh gearbox and an optional Borg-Warner automatic. MGBs utilized the BMC B-Series engine up from the 1600cc MGA power plant to 1800cc fed by 38mm SU carburettors. Australian-delivered MGBs were assembled from 1963 to 1972, from imported complete knock down chassis (CKD) by the Pressed Metal Corporation in Enfield NSW subsequently moving to BMC Australia's Zetland plant in 1968 before closing down in 1972 when the government dictated 85% local content for cars sold here. Only roadster variants were produced in Australia. This genuine Australian built MGB Mk II roadster presents in good condition and makes an affordable weekend tourer suitable for club and social events.
