  • Notes:
One of America's most fascinating motor companies dating back to 1897, Oldsmobile consistently built cars in limited numbers and in 1939 the 60 Series simplistic styling was a forerunner to the Futuramics of the late 1940s. At this time Oldsmobile held seventh market position with production numbers for the model year of 137,249. Highest priced car in the 1939 range was the sedan. 14,554 were produced, with 1404 exported. The 60 Series on a 115-inch wheelbase was powered by an Economaster six cylinder, 90hp engine in an all-new body. Power steering was introduced and Oldsmobile's "rhythmic ride" was heralded: coil springs at all wheels, knee action front suspension, stabilizer bars and double action shock absorbers. Other luxury innovations included "Safety Automatic Transmission", push button radio, rear seat heater, glove box clock, winter grille cover, automatic windshield washer and fender skirts. This excellent example was built in South Australia by the Holden Motor Company as a Complete Knock Down [CKD] chassis utilising locally manufactured parts. Records from the Woodville production figures show that 1041 Oldsmobile Series 60 were built in 1939. The current owner found this car in St Kilda in 1995 and embarked on a full ground-up restoration. The work was completed by Joe & Troy Fava at Western Smash Repairs Sunshine, American classic and muscle car restoration specialists. The interior was fully and comprehensively refurbished. The original leather seats and door liners were tinted and rejuvenated. The original bakelite door handles and window winders were retained. The entire running gear was either reconditioned or replaced and the electrics sympathetically upgraded and converted to 12 volt. The two pack midnight blue paintwork matches the original colour and shows the care dedicated to restoring this vehicle. Winner of the 1998 Pre-War Classic section at Melbourne's Concourse D'Elegance and a number of first prize places at Annual Oldsmobile Club Victorian Show Days, the car has done just 4200 miles since restoration.
