Lot Description:1956 MELBOURNE: framed and glazed display of memorabilia belonging to DORIS CARTER
General Manager of the Australian Women's Team at the Melbourne Olympics, including her personal invitation from the Organizing Committee to "The Solemn Opening of the Congress of the International Olympic Committee (Melbourne Town Hall, 19th November), and her parking authority notice for the same function; also featured are two Main Stadium Athletic programmes, Shooting programme, Official's 3/- Luncheon Tickets (2), Main Stadium tickets (2) & Olympic Guide Map, etc; overall 84x67.5cm. -
Notes:Doris Carter became Australia's first women's field athlete to compete at an Olympic Games when finishing sixth in the high jump at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. She also represented Australia in international hockey, and was president of the Australian Women's Amateur Athletic Union prior to her prestigious appointment for the XVIth Olympiad. A Wing Officer and Director of the Women's RAAF, she was the first woman to fly both the Canberra Bomber and the Vampire Jet.
