Angas contributed twelve engravings drawn on wood from sketches taken during John McDouall Stuart’s expeditions, including his Third Expedition (in the vicinity of Lake Torrens), November 1859 to January 1860. These were illustrated in Explorations in Australia, The Journals of John McDouall Stuart, during the years 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861 & 1862, when he fixed the centre of the continent and successfully crossed it from sea to sea. Angas made all the Stuart exploration drawings for engravings in England, after his return there in 1863. These were published in London in 1865 in Stuart’s journals. Angas did not accompany Stuart on any expedition. He worked from sketches supplied to him and relied on Stuart's journal descriptions. Most of the original Angas drawings for the Hardman edition of Stuart's journals are held in collection of the National Library of Australia, Canberra.
