Lot Description:Victorian Sterling Silver Twin Handled Cup
hallmarks rubbed, c.1869, inscribed 'Geelong Artillery/ SHOOTING COMP/ Won by/ Capt. L. R. Cole', the other side decorated with an image of a man kneeling and shooting a rifle, surrounded by scroll work, flanked by s-scroll handles, total weight 347gm -
Provenance:Vizard Foundation, 2001 Geelong Exhibition No 54, Lawsons Vizard Foundation Auction of Important Australian Silver, then Private Collection Note: Geelong formed two artillery units from 1863-1872, which was succeeded in 1873 by the Geelong Corps RWAR" which was finally disbanded in 1883. This date range has been used to attribute the cup to a Birmingham manufacture.
