Notes:One of the most popular types of Dogon mask is known as kanaga. These masks are worn at Dama rituals. During this ritual the souls of deceased family members are transported away from the village. Kanaga masks are characterized by their wooden superstructure in the form of a double-barred cross. This crest symbolises people, crocodiles, and flying birds. According to Marcel Griaule the deeper meaning of the crest pertains both to God and to the arrangement of the universe
