  Although titled in the mount “George, Fourth Earl of Clarendon, 1822” we believe the subject is Juan álvarez y Mendizábal, born Juan álvarez Méndez (1790 –1853), a Spanish economist and politician who served as Prime Minister of Spain from September 1835 to May 1836. He had been born to Rafael álvarez Montañés, a cloth merchant, and Margarita Méndez, a Christianised Jewess of Marrano origin.
