  carved with scarification on the cheekbones and forehead

  Purchased Christensen Collection, then Private Collection Southern Highlands.
• Notes:
  Punu maiden masks are known for their simple, unflawed beauty and perfection, but this older variant of a type represented in the collections of the British Museum and many other famous institutions presents the maiden's face with significant geometric scarification above the brow and cheekbones. Since carvers traditionally chose the most beautiful village woman as their models, this must have been a local fashion.
