Lot Description:Fine George II Sterling Silver Circular Footed Salver
hallmarked, London, 1748, Peter Taylor, the cast border interspersed with masks, grapes and foliage, centering a coat of arms, raised on four fruit and foliate cluster feet, total weight 994gm, d 33 cm -
Notes:The family arms are of Seymour, Dukes of Somerset, descended from Sir Edward Seymour - brother of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII. The shield's quarter with two wings co-joined in lure are the Seymour family arms; the quarter with three lions of England between six fleurs-de-lis, was a hereditary augmentation of honour granted to Seymour by the King on his marriage to Jane Seymour in 1536. Arthur Grimwade: (London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, Their Marks and Lives, 3rd Edition 1990) notes regarding Peter Taylor, 'Although rare, his work when found shows a high standard of craftsmanship, coupled with a nice use of rococo ornament.'
