The Grasshopper Clock is based on the first marine chronometer made by the world’s most famous clock maker John Harrison (1693 – 1776). The clock features the ‘grasshopper escapement’ operated by two inter-linked pendulums that compensated for the motion of a ship. The eight day fusee movement is made from solid brass that is hand polished and gold plated. The dials are silver plated. Seconds are indicated by the 180° scale above the clock face. The time is indicated by fine Bregeut hands. Each clock is supplied with a copy of Dava Sobel’s book Longitude that reveals the story of John Harrison’s life.
