    A rare 15ct gold medallion for The Melbourne Tramways Trust and selected personal effects belonging to David Methven MLA (1840-1918), 1906
    comprising a circular medallion pierced to the centre with the initials 'MTT' in script, within a border inscribed 'THE MELBOURNE TRAMWAYS TRUST / 1906', inscribed verso 'D. METHVEN / BRUNSWICK', surmounted by a suspension loop, stamped 'G.K KUSTER' and '15CT', within a box with the retail mark 'STOKES & SONS / MEDALLISTS / MELBOURNE'; together with a sterling silver cased pocket watch, the movement signed "Rotherhams London", the case with engine-turned decoration centred by a vacant cartouche, inscribed internally 'PRESENTED TO / GEORGE METHVEN / on his / 21st Birthday / 24.7.94' and signed 'D. Methven' beneath the cover, with an Arabic numeral white enamel dial and subsidiary seconds dial, together with a watch key and a fob chain; a Victorian burr walnut writing compendium of typical form, inset with a brass cartouche engraved 'D. Methven'; and a Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board paper ticket

    Mr David Methven, acquired in 1906; Private Collection, Melbourne, by descent from the above in 1918; Private Collection, Canberra, by descent from the above in 1974
  • Notes:
    A Scotsman who immigrated to Melbourne in 1860, Methven worked as a quarryman and gold prospector, before becoming a civil contractor engaged in railway construction and road construction in New South Wales, Queensland and Melbourne. His later business interests included the founding of the Brunswick Gas Company and the promotion of a bus company operating between East Brunswick and Melbourne. In public life, Methven served three terms as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Victoria for the East Bourke Boroughs, was four times elected Mayor of the city of Brunswick and held the position of Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioner from 1900-1913.
