MOVIE POSTER: WHEN THE KELLYS RODE, Colour lithograph
76 x 34cm. Linen-backed. Text reads “They defied the law - but the law prevailed! £8000 REWARD - Robbery and Murder Imperial Feature Films present When the Kellys Rode, with Hay Simpson as Ned Kelly, Regina Somerville, Jack Appleton, Norman Wait, Robert Inglis. Produced at Cinesound Studios, a Harry Southwell production. An action-packed romance of early Australia! Printed by W.E. Smith Ltd., Sydney.”
  • Notes:
It is hardly surprising that neither the film nor the star are household names. Hay Simpson died in 1937 after completing only his second film, Mystery Island, shot on Lord Howe Island. Simpson and another actor set out for Australia in a 16-foot skiff when shooting finished. Neither men nor boat were seen again. When the Kellys Rode also ran into problems - courtesy of a wary constabulary. Its 1934 release was banned in NSW, lest it fuel the fires of rebellion among a populace firmly on Ned’s side. When the Kellys Rode finally had a season in Sydney in 1948. “Apparently it attracted quite large crowds, much to the surprise of the trade".
