Lot Description:A Rare Life-size Granite Sculpture of Guandi, Seated Leaning Slightly Backwards on a Rockwork Bench, Ming Dynasty [1368-1644] 15th C.
a powerful figure, seated with legs apart with hands resting on his knees, the facial expression with bulging eyes & elongated ears and a furrowed brow with a broad nose, the upper chest is carved with a breast panel with vestige of his amour, wearing a cloak over the armour & a scholars scarf.

Provenance:Acquired in the New Territories, China in the mid 1990s

Notes:The sculptor created a strong character with detailed contrasts, creating the illusion of different textures in the stone, all masterfully worked by hand, a representation of this much admired historical figure.
