  • Notes:
James Valentine (1815-1880) produced Scottish topographical views from the 1860s, and later became internationally famous as a producer of picture postcards. In 1855 he erected one of the largest photographic glasshouses in Britain. In 1866 he carried out his first Royal commission and received the Royal warrant in 1867. Valentine aimed at the middle and upper class tourist market, subjects concentrated on Scotland, then in 1882 on England and then in 1900 on fashionable resorts abroad. George Washington Wilson (7 February 1823 - 9 March 1893) Born in Scotland, Wilson was a pioneering photographer. He studied art in Edinburgh and London and returned to his native Aberdeen in 1849 to establish a business as a portrait miniaturist catering to the wealthy of North East Scotland. In 1852, he set up a portrait studio with John Hay and became contracted by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to photograph the royal family while documenting the building of Balmoral Castle in 1854-1855. Pioneering the development of techniques for photography outside of the studio and mass produced photographic prints, he moved into landscape photography in the 1860's. At the time of his death in 1893, the firm employed 40 staff and was competing with James Valentine as one of the largest publishers of photographic prints in the world.
