    Letter Believed To Have Been Written On Bloodstained Paper From A Mortally Wounded Soldier
    written by the aunt of Sgt. Charles S. Sheldon Co. 'G' 12th Regt. New Hampshire Regt. Vol. Inf. to Capt. Edwin E. Bedee of the same regiment, relating the story of Sheldon's death, the stained paper believed to have been taken from his portfolio which he may have been leaning on after he was wounded in the ankle, framed with copy of letter attached to back; with research material on Sheldon including a biography and copies of his army and pension files (a lot)

  • Notes:
    Sgt. Sheldon was wounded severely in the ankle at the battle of Cold Harbour on 3rd June, 1864. Although he received attention for the wound, by the time he arrived at hospital on 17 June it had turned gangrenous and his leg was amputated. However septicaemia had set in and he died on 27 June, 1864.
