  Hardwood Writing Slope Used By Capt. Edward A. Todd Co. 'C' 2Nd Regt. Vermont Infantry
  including two copper and brass inkwells, writing implement compartment, two removable slopes, one stencilled 'CAPT. E.A. TODD, 2 VT. INF.'; with a ninth plate tintype photograph of Capt. Todd in leatherette case, with descriptive typed label, inscribed 'This photo came with his identified desk' to verso; with research material on Todd including a biography and copies of his army files (a lot)

• Notes:
  Edward Todd joined the 2nd Vt. Infantry on 20 June, 1861 as Captain of the Colour and was the youngest officer in the line. At the 1st Battle of Bull Run on 21 July, 1861 he was shot through the neck by a Minie ball which narrowly missed his jugular vein. He resigned his commission on account of the effects of his wounds on 8 January, 1862 and reenlisted on 13 April, 1863 as a 2nd Lt. in Co. 'K' 1st Regt. Vt. Heavy Artillery. He was later promoted to 1st Lt. in December, 1863 and then 2nd Capt. in September, 1864. Todd was wounded again at the Battle of Opequan, VA. on 19 September, 1864 and resigned his commission on 18 April, 1865. After the war Todd studied to become a doctor and died in Massachusetts on 2 August, 1913, aged 72 years. His wife survived him by 31 years, dying in 1944, aged 95 years.
