• Notes:
  At the 1937 Paris Exposition the Spanish pavilion – put together despite the nation's ongoing civil war – contained the fair's most valuable creation: Pablo Picasso's "Guernica", a brutal depiction of the horrors of war and a cultural touchstone in times of looming conflict.
