Lot Description:Tin Shaker Carried By Pte. Henry Witt Co. 'H' 147Th New York Infantry
probably used as a coffee shaker, fashioned from a metal condiment tin, with holes punched into the lid; with vendor's descriptive tag; and a four page letter written by Witt to his children dated 23 November, 1862, including a quaint drawing of a Civil War soldier feeding a mule (2)

Notes:Coffee in the field was mostly issued in the form of beans. These were crushed using a musket stock or other suitable implement, to form a powder. The shaker would have been used to filter out any unwanted hard lumps. Henry Witt was born in Unity, NH. in 1828. A cooper by trade, he married in 1848 and was father to two children. He joined Co. 'H' 147th NY Inf. on 10 August, 1862 and served as a cook and HQ guard. He was listed as missing after the Battle of the Wilderness on 5 May, 1864 and was a POW at Andersonville, until paroled on 27 February, 1865. Witt was discharged on 7 June, 1865. He died on
