THE CONVICT RECORD OF GEORGE YOUNG
Only 15 years old at the time he was found guilty of house-breaking and larceny at the Central Criminal Court (The Old Bailey) in May 1839, Young was sentenced to 10 years transportation, arriving at Van Diemen's Land aboard "Runnymede" in March 1840. The present document records his sad passage through the convict system for the next 11 years at which time, presumably, he received his ticket of leave. The two-sided mss document lists the many times he was confined to solitary confinement, received lashes, spent time at Port Arthur, spent time in chains and had his sentences extended.
  • Notes:
Research into his later years reveals that in 1856 Young, aged 32, was convicted of a breach of the Master & Servant Act, in that a female servant, aged about 14, was found naked in his house at about midnight and in the company of his wife. He was later gazetted for a Conditional Pardon on the condition that he leave the Colony.
