Notes:As part of his practice, Gordon Walters made a habit of constantly re-reading his own oeuvre, reworking ideas from decades prior, revising and adapting them into more developed versions. The idea for Then began in 1955 with the work 1st Study for 'Then', its lines looser and its colour a darker blue. Drawing on rock-based-art, Walters presents a stylised, headless human figure, minimally constructed with the use of an open-centered vertical rectangle for the torso and a single vertical line for each, briefly represented limb. In this refined edition, the development of Walters original idea is clear. Twenty-five years after its first conception, it is visible how Walters has tightened and geometricised the composition, having refined it again and again to finally reach the complete abstraction we see here.
