Notes:Barry Lett’s sculptural series of women is an adventurous and successful mixture of his typical stone and ceramic mediums. Woman With Child is full of binaries, it is both sharp and soft, both minimal and detailed. Its domestic size lends itself to be situated indoors while its robust materials also allows for outdoor display. Unique in her positioning, Woman With Child is reminiscent of a seated Virgin Mary holding her baby Jesus, his arms extended to welcome you in. In January 2017, the TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre presented an important survey exhibition of Lett’s work spanning four decades. Woman with Child was given a central position, flanked by two large standing works; Woman With Bird, which was gifted to Auckland Art Gallery by the Friends of the Gallery in 1991, and Woman with Fish. As a pioneer art dealer who aided in the establishment of a thriving art scene in Auckland, the late Barry Lett was a unique individual who successfully traversed the roles of both dealer and artist.
