Lot Description:SHANGHAI, CHINA: A photograph album, 1897 – 1899 - JACKSON, John, and various unidentified photographers
Oblong quarto (240 x 340mm) in defective binding (lacking upper board and spine) containing over 90 photographs laid down on 22 thick card leaves; the first leaf with ownership inscription of “John Jackson, Shanghai, 1897”. -
Notes:The photographs comprise 22 large format albumen print photographs of scenes in Shanghai during the Celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897; 3 large format images of the Shanghai Volunteer Artillery Corps, Light Horse and Infantry on their parade ground; 2 large images of Shanghai Harbour with the ship “Pekin” and a dredge at work; 2 group portraits of British members of the Shanghai Fire Brigade; and 65+ smaller silver gelatin photographs (presumably by Jackson) with shots of the Shanghai Rowing Regatta, street scenes, the Fire Brigade in action, upriver on the Yangtse, the French Bund, European soldiers and sailors, Chinese prisoners, etc. The majority in good condition. It is possible that Jackson was an Australian, working in Shanghai in a civilian capacity since the album had been in Australian for many decades before first coming onto the market.
