  • Notes:
The date we now call Australia Day, January 26, to remember the first British settlement in Australia in 1788, was previously called Foundation Day. It wasn’t until 1935 that January 26 was termed Australia Day in all Australian States and territories. The first Australia Day, July 30th 1915, was a response to Australia’s involvement in World War One at a time when the young country was shaping its new national identity. The idea of a national day for raise funds to support wounded troops came from the mother of four servicemen. Australian troops were fighting at Gallipoli and there was a patriotic mood across the country. Communities all over Australia organised fundraising events for the newly announced Australia Day.
